How to Pose for Family Photos: Fun, Candid, and Heartwarming Ideas
Family photos are more than just pictures—they’re memories reflecting all the love, laughter, and connection you share with your family every single day, beautifully captured with a natural, playful pose for family photos. While traditional posed portraits have their place, the best family photos often capture real emotions and interactions. As a mom myself I really believe that the best photos are of your family being themselves, engaging and laughing together and that is why I do things differently. Every family session we get the stand still and look at the camera photos done first, this takes ten minutes max and then we go and play.
In my experience I have found that this works wonderfully for families with young children because young kids only have to be still for a few minutes and then we get to go and have fun.
I want to share with you my go to list of some of the best things your family can do during a session.
1. Play with Your Kids
Genuine joy and fun comes out when playing with your children. Instead of forcing stiff poses, I encourage my clients to engage in activities that naturally bring out smiles and laughter.
- Swing them around: Lift your little one in the air or twirl them around to capture the magic.
- Hold hands and walk silly: Kids love to be silly and walking with them bumping into each other is a fun way to get some beautiful photos.
- Piggyback rides: Give your child a ride on your back and laugh together as the photographer snaps away.
These playful moments will make your photos look authentic and as you are making genuine connections with each other.
2. Embrace Natural Laughter
Instead of forcing a smile, let the laughter come naturally. A great photographer will often say something funny or capture moments where family members are genuinely laughing together.
- Share a funny memory: Bring up an inside joke or a silly story to get natural reactions.
- Whisper something goofy: Have family members whisper something silly into each other’s ears to spark spontaneous giggles.
The key is to focus on real interactions rather than stiff poses.
3. Engage with Each Other, Not Just the Camera
A common problem I commonly see parents struggle with is trying to get themselves and their children to always look at the camera. While some posed shots are nice, the most meaningful images often show families interacting with each other.
- Look at each other: Instead of staring at the camera, turn to a family member and share a moment together.
- Hold hands or hug: A gentle touch, like a hug or holding hands adds warmth to photos.
- Say a silly word: Parents or kids can say a silly word (Nincompoop is always with little kids). Everyone smiles and laughs while engage with each other.
I have found that this approach creates a more intimate and emotional connection in your photos.
4. Use Props to Add Personality
Props can add a unique flair to your family photos, making them feel more natural and engaging.
- Blanket Swings and London Bridge: This is a go to game that I am constantly having families with young kids play. It is fun and easy for the kids to figure out, but it is filled with big smiles.
- Blow bubbles: These small activities create motion and excitement, making your pictures dynamic.
- Cuddle on a blanket: Sitting on a blanket close together makes for an intimate shot with
Props can also help shy children feel more relaxed in a session, making them more comfortable in front of the camera.
5. Let the Kids Take the Lead
Children have the best expressions when they’re allowed to be themselves. During a family session I will not force them into specific poses, but rather let them take charge of some moments.
- Ask them to show their favorite pose: Kids love to be silly—let them do a goofy stance or jump in the air.
- Have a little dance party: Encourage movement and spontaneity to bring out real smiles.
- Follow their curiosity: If they’re drawn to a flower, a rock, or a puddle, I capture those candid moments.
I have found that by letting kids be themselves, you’ll get the most natural and heartwarming photos.
6. Make It an Experience, Not Just a Photo Session
In my professional experience I have found that the best thing for families to do is come into a session with the mindset that this is an experience rather than a task. The more fun you have, the better your photos will turn out!
Family photos should capture love, joy, and connection, not just perfect poses. By focusing on real interactions, laughter, and movement, you’ll end up with images that truly reflect your family’s unique bond. Whether you’re swinging your kids around, whispering jokes, or sharing a quiet hug, the most important thing is to be yourselves and enjoy the moment.
