How to Prepare for a Newborn Photo Session

Bringing your baby into the world is one of the most unforgettable experiences you’ll ever have—and capturing those first sweet days with a newborn photo session helps you hold onto every precious detail.

If you’re wondering how to prepare for a newborn photo session, you’re not alone. Most parents come in feeling a little unsure about what to expect. The good news? My sessions are designed to be as relaxed and baby-led as possible, with everything taken care of so you can simply show up and soak in the moment.

Whether you’re a first-time parent or adding another little love to your family, here’s how to make the most of your newborn photo session—

1. The Best Time to Schedule Your Newborn Photos

I recommend scheduling your newborn photo session during your second or early third trimester to ensure availability. We’ll note down your due date and stay flexible once baby arrives. The best time to photograph newborns is typically between 13-21 days old. During this window, babies are still extra sleepy and flexible—perfect for those beautifully posed shots.

If your baby is a little older, don’t worry. I’ve photographed “newborns” up to 6 weeks and still captured beautiful images. Every baby is different, and I adjust each session to suit your unique little one.

2. What to Bring and What You Can Leave at Home

One of the perks of working with me? You don’t need to bring much! My studio is fully stocked with wraps, headbands, hets, and props that are clean, coordinated, and camera-ready. If there’s a special heirloom or outfit you’d like to include, I’m happy to incorporate it. Please email me so that I am aware of the special item and I will plan in a custom way to photograph your little one with the beloved item.

Here’s a quick list of what to bring:

  • Baby dressed in a sleeper outfit with a zipper for easy outfit changes
  • A pacifier (even if baby doesn’t usually use one—it can help soothe during posing)
  • Extra diapers and wipes
  • Snacks and entertainment for older siblings, if they’re joining

Parents often come in feeling like they need to have everything together. Please know: you don’t. I’ve got the session covered—you just focus on loving your baby and enjoy the experience.

3. What to Wear

Solid colors photograph beautifully and keep the focus on baby. Soft whites, creams, greens, blues and earth tones are all great choices. I’ll guide you through this more in our prep guide, but think simple and comfortable.

Moms, you don’t need to stress about makeup or hair. A fresh, clean face and a touch of lip color is plenty if you want it. I love capturing real moments with real people—your connection is what makes the photos magical. What to Wear Newborn Session

4. How to Prepare for the Unexpected

Babies don’t always follow the plan—and that’s okay. I allow plenty of time in each newborn photo session to accommodate feedings, changes, and snuggles. If baby is fussy or alert for a while, we work with it.

One thing that helps? Feeding baby right before the session or once you arrive. A full belly and a warm studio are usually the perfect recipe for a sleepy, content baby.

If you’re breastfeeding and feeling a little unsure about nursing in the studio, know that this is a totally judgment-free zone and I step out of the studio while a mom is breastfeeding. You can nurse comfortably and take breaks as needed.
