Formula Fed VS Breastfed Newborn Session
There is a difference and it might not be what you think!
In this blog, I want to tell you about the difference between breastfed and formula fed babies in relation to newborn sessions. There is a difference and I want to help guide you through the best timing for your baby’s session.
Hi, I’m Rosalynn. I am a newborn photographer here in Goodyear Arizona, and I love the newborn stage. I love being able to work with new moms and to be able to capture and memorialize these beautiful, beautiful moments with their new baby.
First of all I am not here to give you advice on how to feed your baby or cast any type of mom guilt onto you. I am strictly here to give you information so that you know what to expect with a newborn session, whether your baby is formula fed or breastfed.
The first thing we’ll start with is general newborn session information. Your baby’s comfort is first and foremost the priority. Babies are hungry and they’re a lot. Because of that, the session goes completely based on what the baby can handle. So if the baby needs to stop and feed, we stop and feed the baby, because if your baby is happy and comfortable, they will be relaxed and we will be able to do the session.
Now, the ideal time frame is between 3 to 21 days old. You can have a newborn session with a baby that is a little bit older; I have done sessions all the way up to six weeks.
But the ideal age range is to keep the session as close to fresh out of the womb as possible. For a breastfeeding mom, that can become slightly problematic for one reason: milk production. A new mother’s body does not immediately produce milk, for the first few days her body is producing colostrum and that can leave a newborn baby very hungry and constantly wanting to feed. I recommend to my clients to wait until the mom’s milk has come in, because then baby will have a full tummy during the session. This will ensure that we are setting the new baby up to be comfortable and sleepy, making the whole session a win!
Now that we have discussed avoiding the colostrum stage for a newborn, this is why there’s that difference with a formula fed baby. A formula fed baby can get as full as they need to right from the start because we can always get more formula, they’re not dependent on mom’s body and what mom’s body is doing. So a formula fed baby can easily be three and four days old for their session, since we have the option to fill up their tummies.
I hope this helps you get a clearer picture on making the best decision for your family’s newborn session. If you’re interested in talking to me about newborn sessions and getting more general information click the consultation link right here, and you schedule a call with me.
