The Mama Coach

One of my favorite parts of my job—besides capturing your sweet family moments—is being able to share helpful resources with moms. I know how overwhelming those early days with a newborn can be, and I want you to feel supported every step of the way.

That’s why I’m so excited to introduce you to Amanda from The Mama Coach. She’s a NICU nurse and pediatric sleep consultant who has helped so many moms feel more confident and calm when it comes to newborn sleep. Her advice is practical, gentle, and full of heart—just what we all need in those sleep-deprived early weeks.

I’m so glad to share her wisdom with you today. Now here is Amanda:

As a NICU nurse and pediatric sleep consultant, I often see parents with the same worry: “I just want to do the right thing.” If that’s you, please know—I see you and hear you. You are not alone, and you are already doing an amazing job because you are here, reading this blog. That alone shows that you care so much!

I am a sleep consultant and registered nurse, and here to help educate and support your family with your sleep goals. Sleep hygiene builds a foundation of peace and predictability for both your baby and family. I teach evidence-based information to keep your family confident!

Always Place Baby on Their Back to Sleep

This is the #1 safe sleep recommendation from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Babies should always be placed to sleep on their backs, whether it’s nighttime or naptime. This position helps protect their airway and has been proven to reduce the risk of SIDS. If your baby moves into a different position, that is typically ok, and they don’t need to be positioned onto their back again.

Use a Firm, Flat Sleep Surface

Your baby should sleep in a safety-approved crib, bassinet, or play yard. The mattress should be firm with a fitted sheet—and nothing else. No blankets, loose covers, bumpers, toys, stuffed animals, or pillows. While it might not be Instagram-worthy, a bare sleep space is a safe sleep space.

Room Share, Don’t Bed Share

Keeping your baby in your room (but not in your bed) for at least the first 6 months helps lower SIDS risk and makes nighttime feeds easier. A bedside bassinet or crib within arm’s reach is ideal. If you choose to move your baby into their independent sleep before 6 months, it is recommended to have a baby camera on their sleep space to watch them.

Swaddles & Sleep Sacks

Swaddles are safe in the newborn phase-but once baby starts to roll, it’s time to transition to a sleep sack. When swaddling, you want to swaddle with their hands up to their face. You want the swaddle to be secure, but not a straight jacket, and make sure there is still flexion at the hips! Many wearable blanket options can be a cozy and secure alternative to loose bedding. Always follow manufacturer instructions for safe use.

Keep the Room Cool

Babies sleep best in a room that’s 60-68 degrees Fahrenheit. Dress your baby in one more layer than you’re wearing-light and breathable is best! A great place to check temperature is on the back of their neck or flank area (lower back) since it is more of a core temperature.

Creating a safe sleep environment doesn’t have to be fancy or complicated—it just has to be intentional. And you’re already on the right path.

You were chosen for your little one on purpose. If you ever need personalized guidance or just a cheerleader in your corner, I’m here for you. Book a clarity call here, where I can assist you with your sleep goals, whether it is bedtime support, nap times, or wanting to minimize night time wake-ups. I offer many different options for sleep support so it truly is not a one size fits all!

I hope you found these tips helpful and reassuring as you navigate those first precious (and sometimes challenging) weeks with your little one. You’re doing an incredible job momma. If you ever need a little extra help, Amanda is a wonderful resource to turn to.
