What should I bring to my Family Photography Session?

How to fail-proof your family photography session

Are you wondering what you need to bring with you to a family photography session?

Are you wanting to set your little one up for the best session they have ever had?

Or is this the first time you have ever thought about this and you’re now a deer in the headlights, wondering what on earth you do need to bring?

Well don’t worry, I got you. Throughout the years I have experienced many last minute needs during sessions and I have my best supplies list to share with you.

  1. Lots of mess-free snacks that won’t stain mouths or spill
Whether it is fruit snacks, apple slices, or animal crackers, a snack is a hit for kids during a session. Sometimes they need a break or they get hungry during their session. Either way, coming prepared with this will help your child succeed during their session.
  2. Water for everyone
Let’s face it, living in Arizona we need lots of water and it gets hot. Bringing water for the whole family will ensure that we have a great session and can take water breaks for anyone who needs it.
  3. A brush, hairspray and/or gel
Now this isn’t always needed during a session, but when it is needed, trust me, IT’S NEEDED! Having this in your purse or diaper bag during the session can be a life saver for anyone who’s hair is going rogue on them.
  4. Makeup for touch-ups
Rocking beautiful lipstick? Worried about blemishes? Bring your makeup in your purse or diaper bag for last minute touch ups.
*I will be watching out for any makeup needs or hair needs as we go and we can take care of it on the spot for you.
  5. Jackets/sweaters during sessions in the winter
I know we live in Arizona, so this doesn’t always apply. However, when it gets cold, kids will tell you. All those adorable sleeveless dresses can get really chilly in the winter and kids will want to stop to get warm. Bringing jackets or a blanket can go a long way during those chilly winter sessions.
  6. Bug spray for sessions by water
Mosquitoes and flies, ugh. During a lake or river session bugs can be vicious attackers. Honestly, there is nothing quite like trying to engage happily with your family while being eaten alive by mosquitoes. Best thing is to bring a little bug spray to keep away the pests during the session.
  7. PJs for the car ride home
A quick change into PJs in the car after the session might be a great option for your family. Kids play hard during a session and when we are done it can be really close to bedtime. Take advantage of this by bringing a pair of PJs to put on your kids once you are back at the car.
  8. A prepared photographer
Choosing the right photographer for your family is key to great photos. They need to have an eye for detail, clear directions, and engaging with your family.

I know your purse is ready for a successful family session. For more great tips like this, you’ll want to download my free guide to great family photos. In here you will find this topic discussed, as well as coordinating outfits, how to engage with your kids, and much more.
