When should I book my newborn session?

“When should I book my newborn session?” This is one of the questions I get asked the most often as a newborn photographer. And it is one I have the answer for! First off, you should book while you are still pregnant, mostly because life gets really crazy with a newborn baby. As a newborn photographer and a mom myself, I know first hand that life is a whirlwind after a baby is born.
Mama, you are going to be tired; you will have doctor visits, you have follow up visits, there will be new baby snuggles, sleepless nights, new schedules, and a whole bunch of other things going on, all while going through a major life adjustment. Trying to find a photographer while your whole life has just made a good, but very drastic, shift is not the best time. Putting it off until the baby is born can leave you stressed trying to get booked into someone else’s schedule and you could miss your window.
Additionally, with newborn photos, you are working within a specific time frame: you want your photos when your baby is still very little. The best age range is between three and 21 days old. This is such a short window that it can be easy to miss your opportunity to get newborn photos if you delay scheduling a session.
This is why I tell my clients that the best time to book is before you have the baby, as this ensures that you’re able to get a good photographer to work with and easily get on to their schedule, without added stress and without the risk of missing your best newborn age range.

So you might be asking at this point, “babies come when they decide, why or how do I pick a date?” I know, as a mom myself and as a newborn photographer, I understand we can’t always get the arrival date right. Babies come when they want to come, so I have a plan for that. When we get you added to my schedule, we select date(s) within a projected amount of time. If the baby comes early, we adjust the session date and have it earlier. Or if the baby comes late, we adjust the session date and the schedule, moving your session to a later date. The main thing is to get locked in on a photographer’s schedule so your spot is secured.
For my clients, the first step is a consultation call to plan out your session. This also gives us a chance to see if we are a good fit together. If the call is a success, the next step is to sign a contract and pay the $100 deposit. After those steps, you are locked into my schedule and we will adjust the session date as needed.
I have yet to need to adjust a newborn session date; between the mom-to-be and me we make our best guess, and have been pretty accurate so far. But if I need to adjust a date, I will work with you to do it.
